I’m going to Disney World to see the Christmas lights!

IMG_3667-WDW-EPCOT-Lights-of-Winter:) First one friend posted that he would be in Disney World mid-December and then another friend said she would be there, too. And then, yet another friend texted me last night to let me know there was a behind-the-scenes special on HGTV, all about decorating Disney World for Christmas. The sight of the sparkly, shimmery castle was too much for me. I hopped online, saw that I had enough points for two free nights at the Swan, and booked it before I could think twice.

Looking forward to seeing my friends. Looking forward to Holidays Around The World at EPCOT. Looking forward to seeing the sparkly, shimmery castle at the Magic Kingdom!

Speaking of booking free nights at the Swan, someone wrote and asked me what that was all about. I do it through the Starwood American Express card. You can redeem the points for hotel stays. If anyone out there is interested in this card, please shoot me an email – BellTinkR at gmail dot com – so I can refer you!

R.I.P., EPCOT “Lights of Winter”

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

IMG_3674-WDW-EPCOT-Lights-of-WinterThis year, Walt Disney World has decided to discontinue their famous “Lights of Winter” display at EPCOT, no doubt disappointing many thousands of fans who were counting on a visit to this display as being one of the highlights of their holiday trip.

The official reason that Disney has given for discontinuing this tradition is that the technology used is obsolete, and also that the display isn’t very “green”. Both of those are valid reasons, but I don’t for a minute believe that either was THE reason the decision was made. Of course, it must be all about the Benjamins. They must be saving a staggering amount in kilowatt hours and therefore money, by shutting down the display. As with every big corporation, decisions like this and the closure of Pleasure Island are ultimately about what is no longer profitable.

I feel pretty lucky that I went to MouseFest near Christmas time in 2006 with some of my Disney internet freak friends (waves *Hi!* to the Disney internet freaks, hopes they wave back :) ). I was able to get a few photographs of the “Lights of Winter”, which didn’t turn out bad, considering I didn’t know any more then than I do now about what all those buttons are for on my camera. Enjoy!

Graffiti bridge in Southwest Florida

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

IMG_2034-Captiva-Blind-Pass-bridge-graffitti:) This is the bridge that spans the newly dredged Blind Pass, now flowing between the islands of Sanibel and Captiva here in Southwest Florida. While checking out the pass one day with friends, I could not resist clambering down the hill to the shore, to see if there were any good shells rolling in. That’s when I saw this graffiti message spray-painted on the side of the bridge. It says, “FREEDOM ISN’T UNDER ANY FLAG”.

I don’t know what it’s all about, so I’m going to make something up. I think someone objects to the Pledge of Allegiance. For those of you who hail from countries other than the United States, here’s how the Pledge goes:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the country for which it stands; one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

One of the best things about being Americans is that we have the right to debate stuff like this. We also have the right to remain silent while the pledge is being said, or to speak out and express our opinions if we feel we are being required to do something that is unconstitutional.

But I don’t think we have the right to deface public property just to get our point across. I haven’t been out to Blind Pass since this photograph was taken, so I don’t know if this has already been addressed. But I do hope that the graffiti is gone the next time I visit.

A genuine Disney mystery!

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

One of the “lands” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is Camp Minnie Mickey. There isn’t a whole lot that goes on there these days, now that the live animal show with Pocahontashas been discontinued. At this point, the only reason to go to Camp Minnie Mickey, really, is to see Festival of the Lion King, a Broadway-quality musical review of songs from The Lion King movies. Look to the sides of the path that leads to the theater and you will find many of the beloved classic Disney characters engaged in a variety of outdoor leisure activities. Let’s see who I found there during my most recent trip to Walt Disney World!

102320091306-WDW-DAK-Donald-Duck-Fishing:) Looks like Donald has made quite a catch today, but I’m not sure that particular item will taste very good breaded and fried! Normally, Donald wears a sailor hat, but today he’s wearing the type of hat you can pin lures to, so you don’t lose them. Donald’s bill and feet are yellow, and his jacket is blue – but you will note that Donald Duck wears no pants!

This is really sort of odd. Of all the classic Disney characters, the only one who is not anthropomorphic is Pluto. That’s because he’s actually supposed to be Mickey’s pet, so he is not typically represented with any human characteristics. So, aside from Pluto, all the other classic characters wear clothing, like humans do. But Donald is the odd man out – he is NAKEY from the waist down! Apparently, this is one of the great mysteries of Disney – even the Disney company itself does not seem to know WHY Donald wears no pants.

So… why do YOU think Donald wears no pants?
Hoping for some really creative responses!

:) This sign hangs over the bar at the Mucky Duck, a restaurant on the island of Captiva. It’s located right next to the jackalope 😉 Um, the sign, I mean, not the restaurant!
The irony? I don’t think the Mucky Duck is even open for breakfast… but they do have a webcam pointed toward the beach!

I like this fountain – it’s right in front of Spaceship Earth as you enter the park from the front/monorail entrance. Unfortunately, the view of it from the front of the park is obstructed by those silly Leave-A-Legacy “tombstones” (c’mon, those of you who have seen them, don’t tell me that the whole thing doesn’t sort of remind you of a cemetery!). Maybe someday, Disney will restore the entry to EPCOT and move the silly monuments to someplace where they won’t mess with the scenery!

Fort Myers Beach Sand Sculpting Festival no longer free

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

IMG_7208-FMB-2008-Sand-Sculpting-CompetitionThis is the 23rd year of the Sand Sculpting Festival on Fort Myers Beach here in Lee County, Florida. It is also the year that unemployment in Lee County has climbed to within spitting distance of 14% and may rise well beyond that by year end. So, naturally it makes perfect sense that this is the year that Fort Myers Beach decided to levy a per-head charge of $3-$5 on spectators.

IMG_7212-FMB-2008-Sand-Sculpting-Competition Because, you see, they aren’t going to pay enough for the outrageously over priced hot dogs, burgers and ice cream cones to feed their kids. And they’re certainly not going to make any purchases at the vast open air market, nor are any of them going to belly up to any number of pool bars and fork over ten bucks for something fruity with a little pink umbrella thrown in. And hey, the people who come and cheer and support this festival can certainly make that unemployment check stretch just a wee bit further, so that they can get beyond the barriers that FMB allows the hotels to put in place at the tide line – even though NO ONE OWNS THE BEACHES, DAMMIT.

The whole thing just kind of made me ill, so I skipped it this year. Here are some pics from last year that I never quite got around to publishing. You will note there is a red water sprayer in the first picture, qualifying this post for Ruby Tuesday, where I’m sure Mary will chuckle in appreciation of my righteous indignation. The artists do an amazing job; standing there to watch them, even in the hot sun, is a real treat. Last year, each sculptor had their immediate work area roped off but otherwise, spectators could walk around freely between sites and get as close as perhaps 6-10 feet to any given sculpture.

It’s a damned shame that the people had to PAY to get this close to the sculptures this year. I bet I’m not the only one who stayed away. Fort Myers Beach, in this of all years, you should have figured out another way.
