Disney flash mobs in our future, maybe?

Vinylmation androidsThe Daily Disney reports on the grand opening festivities of D Street, a new merchandise store in Downtown Disney, Orlando. More intriguing to me than the “dominant presence” of Vinymation figures (I may never “get” Vinylmation…) is the somewhat flash-mob-ish live entertainment. Dewayne Bevil reports, “What I really liked about this entertainment was the surprise incorporation of dancers dressed as everyday cast members. The guy in the back looked like one of Disney World’s street sweepers.”

I don’t know about you, but I think I would really like to be walking down Main Street and suddenly find myself in the middle of an unexpected flash mob. As long as they did it randomly (no schedules with people sitting on the curbs waiting) and not too often, I think it would be a cool bit of serendipity to happen upon.

Places I can think of where this would be really cool:

02-17-08_1205-WDW-DHS-animation-studios

  • EPCOT – flash mob takes over the fountain plaza in Future World.
  • MAGIC KINGDOM – the obvious places are the hub or the town square at the entrance, but I think it would be kind of cool to use that area where the sky ride used to queue up – make it useful for something besides stroller parking. The “mob” could crawl all over that little hill, adding a height dimension to the act.
  • ANIMAL KINGDOM – problematic due to the narrow trails in this park. The only place I can see this happening without running into big crowds is basically the whole of Camp Minnie Mickey.
  • HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS – obvious places are along Hollywood Blvd and all around the Big-Ass Hat. Streets of America would be good, too – LOTS of space back there. But the PERFECT place for this activity is actually the Animation Courtyard. It’s a wide open area, and you could have extras pour out of Mermaid and/or Playhouse Disney. OK, even though Studios is my least favorite of all the Disney parks, it is now my favorite site for a potential flash mob.

Yes. I know. Disney should hire me as an entertainment Imagineer. Are you listening, Mouse?

Where would YOU stage a flash mob in Walt Disney World?

READER MAIL: Questions about Ohana and the Polynesian

“Ohana” means “family” – and “family” means no one gets left behind or forgotten.

I got a message on Facebook from a friend and fellow blogger –
“Have you ever eaten at Ohana at the Polynesian? How is it? I tried making reservations online but they say they don’t have any! So I think I’ll call but wanted your opinion.”

My reply:

Ohana is very popular. Keep calling – sometimes people cancel just before the window (I can’t remember – it’s 7 days I think or you forfeit the deposit – I think. Ask when you call!).

The food is good and the entertainment is fun, but it is really geared toward families with children little enough to want to get up and play all the games. Also it is a LOT of food – it’s one of those places where they would put an entire cow on your plate if you let them.

What I like best about eating at Ohana is having a fruity cocktail in the Tambu Lounge beforehand and going out to the pool bar afterward for a nightcap. In the Tambu Lounge, they serve drinks in “the glass that looks back at you”. At the pool, they tend to pipe in the music from Wishes and you get to see it from the Polynesian’s beach.

Got a question you think I know the answer to? Leave a comment or E-mail Me!

World of Color debuts at Disneyland June 11th

While I was at Walt Disney World last weekend, I noticed that much of the merchandise in the shops, both inside the parks as well as at Downtown Disney, was drenched in color. Splashes of bright, nearly-neon color were everywhere. It was as though a box of Crayola Day-Glo threw up all over The World (ewww!). OK, bad analogy for something I actually liked, but you get the idea, right?

Now that I’ve seen the video below, I’m thinking perhaps it’s intentional, to celebrate the opening on June 11th 2010 of World of Color, a new multi-media night time show that will apparently make its home at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Watch this:

Farewell, Magic Kingdom

Farewell, Magic Kingdom, originally uploaded by Tink*~*~*.

i must depart, and not just because of the deluge that threatens to transform the Magic Kingdom into sunken ruins. I actually have to work tomorrow! So I need to get back to my room and pack up, because the alarm will ring early. But first, a stop at the bakery on Main Street USA!

Epcot Flower and Garden Festival – well, except for gardenias and magnolias!

It’s a little late in the season down here in Florida tp be waiting on gardenias and magnolias, but waiting we are. I think maybe the freeze we had during the winter can be blamed. The good news is the orange blossoms smell outrageous :)

Snowbird where are you? Baby in distress!

He fell out of a tree near a mama duck and ducklings. Mama sounded alarm, babies ran behind her. Mama duck pursued, baby bird fluttered across pond, almost drowned!!! I kicked off my shoes, was ready to jump in but he made one, big heroic flutter and made landfall.

Now mama bird has discovered baby is gone, dive-bombs mama duck. i ran and got a CM who got an empty box to capture baby. She got dive-bombed too. Mama bird just won’t let anyone help.

Unique night-time views of the Magic Kingdom

IMG_2621-WDW-MK-Cinderellas-castleWhile watching Tinkerbell fly through the night skies at the opening of the Wishes fireworks show, have you ever wondered how she gets up there? Yes, I know – pixie dust. OK, you got me. Let’s rephrase – suppose YOU wanted to fly through the sky like Tinkerbell, but you were dustless at the moment. How would you get up there? How would you make sure you would not fall?

The Imagineering Disney blog has published a series of photos taken one night while climbing to the very tippy-top of Cinderella’s Castle. The elevator only goes as far as the now-famous Castle Suite, where some lucky guests have had the good fortune to spend the night. To climb beyond that and take in the views, you apparently need a safety harness! If you are the type who thinks a backstage view would “ruin the magic” for you, then don’t CLICK HERE

While trawling around YouTube, I found some TV commercial videos for tourism in Lee County, Florida. I chose to live in Lee because of the proximity to Sanibel Island, one of the Lee Islands. The video embedded above has an “Awwww!” factor that will leave you hungry for unplugged beach time on the Lee Island Coast. And if you can’t get down here for a while, it will at least sustain you until you can.

Book Review: Project Future

There’s a breed of Disney fans who can be classified as Disney scholars. Beyond enjoyment of the magic, they want to know who and what makes it tick. George Taylor is one such fan. He’s got a great library of books that deconstruct, analyze or just plain celebrate Disney, and frequently offers book reviews on the websites for which he writes.

This time, George has chosen “Project Future: The Inside Story Behind The Creation Of Disney World”. I’ve been waiting for this book to be published and now I’m waiting some more until August rolls around, hoping that someone will pluck it from my Amazon Wish List and present it to me for my birthday.

I always look forward to George’s reviews, and was especially pleased to see this one. CLICK HERE to visit 2719 Hyperion and read about “Project Future”. You can also find George at Imaginerding Disney

Shopportunity of the strange at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

© Copyright 2010 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com
Click the photos to see a larger version in Flickr

You might think this is odd, but when it comes to leaving a Disney park, I plan my exit route around how many shops I can hit as I make my way toward the gate. (Long-time readers are feigning shock. Tink *~*~* – a shopper? No! Really? ;p ) There are a couple of reasons you should consider doing this, too. One, you are addicted to Disney merchandise, and even if you’re not buying, you’re still looking. Two, if it is a really hot day, the shops are your air conditioned refuge. Some of them are quite long, actually a series of shops strung together; you can get from one to the next without having to exit to the sidewalk. For instance, at the Magic Kingdom you can enter Casey’s at the rear where the bleachers and cartoons are, and walk clear down to the Emporium without ever having to leave the comfort of climate control.

030620102530-WDW-Shopping-Tinkerbell-pinAt Disney’s Animal Kingdom, there are major shops spaced out all around Discovery Island, so no matter which land you are coming from, you’re passing merchandise and cool air. The shopportunities are just too good to pass up, so you enter to see what you can see. Much of the merchandise will be similar to what you just saw in the last shop you were in, but once in a while you come across something unique, different…. ok, odd. Take this Pirate Tinkerbell pin as an example. Adorable, right? Well, yes – but only until you get close enough to realize that her eyes are these strange, glowing, neon blue blobs and it makes her look like a pod person ready to shed her humanoid form and take over the planet. I would have bought her, except that she gave me the willies!

030620102529-WDW-shopping-Ariel-skirt-sceneHere’s another head-scratcher. We already knew that Ariel didn’t have legs until her dear Auntie Ursula gave her some in exchange for her lovely singing voice. What we didn’t know is that Ursula apparently reneged on the deal, for here we see that instead of legs, Ariel’s got a miniature theater under her skirt, complete with her own “mini-me” shown here in the boat with Prince Eric. The statue is very pretty but when you think about it, she’s actually floating legless above a rowboat and that’s just a tad bizarre. I passed on this one, too.

030620102527-WDW-Shopping-run-away-MickeyThis t-shirt is a bit of a change of pace for Mickey. Normally, he’s friendly, charming, outgoing and always smiling. On this t-shirt, not so much. Mickey is depicted here running, with his hands flailing in the air, looking over his shoulder in abject terror. Clearly, someone – or someTHING – is chasing him. However, we cannot see that because the t-shirt ends just where a would-be pursuer would begin. We may never know what’s made poor Mickey take off like this, but judging from his face, it can’t be good! Still, this one is more edgy than strange, so there’s the possibility I’d buy it, just to be droll. 😉

So what about you?
Do you cut through the shops in the Disney parks to cool off?
And what’s the strangest Disney merchandise you’ve ever seen?

02-18-08_1316-WDW-DAK-brontosaurus:) This is the last of DINOSAUR WEEK here at My Mobile Adventures *~*~*, and I have a question for you – is this Chester or is it Hester?

In the DinoLand section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, everything is named after these two dinosaurs, but I’ve never been able to work out who is who. While this one looks like a brontosaurus, the other one is more of a triceratops.

Does anyone know – which one is Chester and which one is Hester?

RFID Technology Showcased Chicago

Disney quietly working on $1 billion-plus “next generation” technology project

It’s a story after my own, geeky heart. The Orlando Sentinel’s Daily Disney blog reports the existence of a sooper seekrit high tech initiative to incorporate a great deal more wireless technology across the spectrum of the Walt Disney World experience, including the use of RFID (radio frequency identification) chips. Enshrouded in confidentiality agreements and references to “next generation” technology, there are definitely pluses and minuses to any application of this technology you can think of as it relates to theme park resorts. The minuses give me much food for thought. It boils down to an essential question:
QUESTION: Will Disney’s Guests be OK with the use of technology that enhances their experience, but also tracks their every move, all day long?
Come and leave a comment, let me know what you think.

Upcoming Mobile Adventures!

Corkscrew-Swamp-MapCorkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Naples Southwest Florida
Date: unknown!
We got rained out last Sunday – and I mean it practically MONSOONED, so we were grateful we’d had the good sense to call it off. Unfortunately, it looks like it might rain again this Sunday too; as of right now, there’s only a 20% chance, but that could change over the next couple of days. And seriously, who wants to be in a SWAMP when it’s pouring? 😀 So you can see why I’m not precisely sure when I’ll get to this Southwest Florida attraction – which is run by Audubon, by the way – but I WILL get to it! One of the “ghost orchids” bloomed down there last month, and April is typical for ghost orchid blooms, so I’m hoping to be in the right place at the right time to see it. I know I want to get there before Florida becomes hell-hot. Can’t go the following weekend, because I’ve got another adventure planned for then…

IMG00501-WDW-gates-on-the-roadLe Petite Moose Meet
Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida
Dates: Saturday 4/24 – Sunday 4/25
Yes, you are correct – those are the “pearly gates” and I’m going to Disney World! Last month we were there at just the beginning of the Flower and Garden Festival; not everything was assembled yet, and more importantly, the magnolias were not yet in bloom! So I need to get my fix. But the most important thing is that a small (hence “petite”) herd of “mooses” will be converging upon Walt Disney World that weekend. The “mooses” are a clan of Disney-lovin’ folk who met on the internet initially but now all that internet stuff is just filler between play dates at The World. Look for people like @DisneyMoose and @badelves and her family to be tweeting and blogging along with me. I think we’re going to have a blast!

Big Thunder Trivia

[Subscribers: if you do not see a video just below this sentence, then click through to the blog HERE]

Here’s an interesting piece of “Walt Trivia” that I found this week, again in the Daily Disney. Apparently, the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction reflects more than just one of Walt’s personal fascinations. We all know about his love of trains – how he worked one summer selling newspapers on a railroad, and how he grew up to build the Carolwood Pacific Railroad in his back yard when he lived in California. Well, not only are trains incorporated into the Big Thunder attraction, but the attraction itself was allegedly inspired by the time when Walt Disney had owned a home in the vicinity of Sedona’s red rocks. In fact, there’s a rock whose official name is Capitol Butte, but people now call it Thunder Mountain in honor of the Disney attraction.

Dinosaur Week: rock-o-saurus?

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

IMG_0932-WDW-DAK-dinosaur-stones:) A few years back, I was treading the path up to Camp Minnie Mickey at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I took a look to my right as I was passing over the stream and I saw this waterfall spewing forth from a pile of… hey wait just a minute! That’s no ordinary pile of rocks. That looks like a dinosaur – a stegosaurus, as a matter of fact! You know, the one that mildly resembles a rhinoceros, only with a bunch of armor all over, and a stand-up collar. Look at the water gushing through those TEETH! It can’t be a mistake; the Imagineers had to have built it that way on purpose. But why? Why build a stegosaurus waterfall on the path to Camp Minnie Mickey?

Well, some people say that it’s not a stegosaurus at all. Some people say that Camp Minnie Mickey was originally supposed to be the site of a “land” in the Animal Kingdom where mythological creatures dwell and that our stegosaurus waterfall was actually supposed to be a fire-breathing dragon. I totally believe that there was originally supposed to be a “Beastly Kingdom” where Camp Minnie Mickey now stands, but no way is that a dragon. It’s very obviously a stegosaurus!

OK, so what do YOU think – dinosaur or dragon?

Dinosaur Week: giant Lego monsters!

IMG_0012-WDW-DTD-Legos-dinosaurs:) Welcome to Dinosaur Week at My Mobile Adventures *~*~* As mentioned elsewhere, the only real reason it is Dinosaur Week is because I have pictures of dinosars to share 😉 Today’s offering comes from Downtown Disney. As many are aware, there is a Lego store there, and they’ve been displaying complex, life-sized Lego sculptures for many years. They are swapped out periodically, so sometimes you get a surprise on your next visit.

These dinosaurs stood very close to the shore. One of the current displays is an entire tourist family. I have to say that my all-time faves were the dragon and the guy who was snoring on the bench outside the store (I think he looked like Frasier from the TV show). I was on a boat from the Port Orleans French Quarter resort when I snapped this photo, so that’s why it’s a behind-and-to-the-side view.

IMG_1035-WDW-DHS-MGM-Dinosaur:) I have decided that it’s DINOSAUR WEEK here at My Mobile Adventures *~*~* – if for no other reason than I have a few pics of dinosaurs 😉

Here’s one from Disney’s Hollywood Studios, only I took the photo when it was still Disney-MGM Studios. He seems to enjoy chowing down on the hibiscus. He’s not very scary, as dinosaurs go – he’s rather placid looking, friendly even, and there are no discernible teeth. I’m pretty sure he’s a vegetarian, actually, so unless he accidentally stomped us, I’m convinced we’ve nothing to fear from him.

I’m not sure what movie he’s supposed to be from – can’t be Jurassic Park because that’s that “other” theme park in Orlando *cough* Universal *cough*. I’m trying to think of what movie Disney or *cough* MGM did that has a dinosaur like this in it, but I’m afraid I’m coming up blank.

Does anyone know what movie this dinosaur appeared in?

I promise, I will not google – I will wait for one of you to tell me!

Wallaby Wanders Wonder

This is a great story that I first discovered on a blog called OMG, what IS that?. I love this blog because Alison can usually dig up some strange, off-beat animal stories. This one is no exception, so I went googling about it.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that a woman from Texas was visiting relatives in the Windemere, Florida area. They live on a street called Wonder Lane – I kid you not! She brought her pet, a 1-year old wallaby named JAK, and he escaped his harness and bounded away.

He’s been spotted here and there in the neighboring area. I’m wondering if anyone thought he was the Easter Bunny!

DisneyNature OCEANS – coming on Earth Day 2010

[Subscribers: if you do not see a video just below this sentence, then click through to the blog HERE]

DisneyNature’s freshman offering, entitled EARTH, was comprised largely of regurgitated footage from the highly acclaimed BBC series Planet Earth. I’ve found the DVD of the complete BBC series to be a worthy investment, and I’ve watched each episode several times. Naturally, I’ve studied the trailer for this next installment, and a lot of it looks familiar. Therefore, I’m more excited about the soundtrack! There’s some nifty background music going on in that trailer, and lacking a soundtrack disc available for purchase as yet, there’s some discussion and searching going on at the AdTunes forums (I haunt that place – TV commercial tunes are my new obsession hobby). (aside: I would have LOVED to have been there when that HUGE whale jumped out of the water – you’ll see it at the end of the trailer!)

Oh, Tink *~*~* – not gorillas AGAIN?!?!?

IMG_3128-WDW-DAK-gorilla-daddyWell, I have been writing about ’em lately, haven’t I? 😉 Which is why this article in The Daily Disney caught my eye, I guess. I have to admit that it gives me a warm-fuzzy to know that useful research is conducted at Disney’s Animal Kingdom – useful not for the human race but for the animals themselves! The gorillas who live on the Pangani Trail in Harambe have been trained to cooperate in the taking of images of their hearts without the use of sedatives. This is useful because silverbacks are known to have heart problems later in life. Therefore, anything that can be learned without putting the animals through an unnecessary procedure is alright in my book! Oh and the other bonus of reading this article is that there are “related links” on the top right of the page. If you are a baby animal enthusiast, you will see lots to explore here.

That’s it for TINK’S *~*~* LINKS this week – hope you’ve enjoyed :)

Tree of Life: the giraffe

102320091275

:) My head was still swimming with the mysteries I’d learned about torri gates and goddesses as I browsed my photos yesterday in search of a Wednesday offering. My eyes came to rest on a photo of the giraffe by the waterfall. This is one of the scenes carved into the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Each time I visit this theme park, I can spend an hour or more just wandering the paths that wind around the Tree. I find this area to be an oasis of sorts, far removed from the noisy crowds. The only sounds are the soothing rush of the waterfalls and occasional bird calls.

IMG_5344

Curious, I fired up google and entered “giraffe symbolism” and found that some traditions believe that giraffes possess superior vision and perceptiveness. There seem to be two factors that influence this belief. One, the giraffe is very tall and can therefore see further into the distance than other animals can. It is said that if the giraffe is your totem (animal spirit guide), then your ability to see into the future is enhanced. Two, the giraffe has a third horn, but it is hidden beneath a flap of skin just above the eyes. This is said to represent inner perception.

Combined with the “flow” of the nearby waterfall, I’m finding that I rather like the idea of a giraffe spirit guide! Now if only Rafiki would come and tell me my future! :)

A sacred gateway and the goddess of “flow”

IMG_1605-WDW-EPCOT-Japan-Torii-gate:) Torii gates are associated with the Shinto and (later on) the Buddhist traditions in Japan. The purpose of a torri gate is to serve as a gateway to a sacred space. This one stands by the lagoon EPCOT. I’m not sure which side of the torri is supposed to be the sacred side – it’s either the Japan pavilion itself, or else it’s the lagoon. I think it’s the water – here’s why.

The Shinto-Buddhist goddess known in Japan as Benzaiten is closely associated with the torri, and is often depicted wearing one on her head. Based upon the Hindu goddess Sarasvati, she is the goddess of “flow”; according to Wikipedia, that would include “water, words (and knowledge, by extension), speech, eloquence, and music”. I’d like to think it also includes the psychological definition of “flow” – to be so caught up in the task at hand, euphoria results. She is also associated with bestowing fortune.

Next time I’m in EPCOT, I need to look in the gift shop at the Japan pavilion and see if there is anything associated to Benzaiten in there. I want to read up on her – she sounds really interesting!

Me and my girl-illa: escape from the paparazzi

This is a continuation of the story that began on March 19th 2010 with “Me and my girl-illaClick the photos to see them larger in Flickr.

IMG_3134-WDW-DAK-baby-gorilla:) Hello again. Last time we met, I was busy sneaking around in the brush, trying to keep the prying lenses of the paparazzi away from my newborn baby girl-illa. There was a whole swarm of them, so I kept her pretty close to me (here you can only see the crown of her cute little head), creeping from one bush to the next, hoping to lose them. It’s not easy to elude the paparazzi; they’re a sly and resourceful bunch of stalkers, often working together to corner us, like dolphins herding schools of fish. I saw that on the BBC’s Planet Earthseries, which seems to have greatly contributed toward Disney’s own Earth (Disney Nature)

It was sunny and peaceful out there for a bit, and we both got some shut-eye. Well, I have one eye shut -the other one has to remain open at all times, just in case we’re invaded again. While we were snoozing, my mobile rang – it was Britney and Billy Ray, conference-calling with some advice on dealing with the whole publicity spotlight thing. Britney says that sometimes it’s better to bring the kid out into the open for a few minutes, under carefully controlled circumstances, of course, to make it seem like you’re friendly and cooperating. Billy Ray concurred that this tactic had worked with his darling Miley many times.

Well what’s a mama to do? I took her up on the hill, a safe distance from that herd of pests, and let them see her face. And wouldn’t you know, she turns out to be quite the little ham! She turned that sweet face up and gazed into my eyes and said, “I dunno who you are but I wuvs you!”. Couldn’t you just melt?

After a while, the paparazzi just started to annoy me. They yell directions, calling me by my first name like they’ve known me all my life, telling me to look this way, hold the baby higher, smile, turn your head, no the other way…. I tell you, this one guy was on my LAST nerve. Here I am giving him my best withering look. I think he was good and properly scared, as well he should be. These paparazzi dudes, they may be armed with a camera, but I’ve got THIS.

Meet the baby daddy :)
