Fantasy living spaces at Walt Disney World – the O, Canada! castle

IMG_2308-WDW-EPCOT-Canada-castle

:)

Canada’s “castle”
What’s inside? I often wonder
Could someone live there?

There’s a suite upstairs in Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom now. Every so often, you hear about someone winning a night in the suite; eventually, I guess Disney will open it up for regular stay bookings (although, I don’t know how that would work if you decided to go out at night and return after the park is closed).

Recently, Disney allowed one lucky family to stay overnight at the Haunted Mansion, also in the Magic Kingdom. Can you imagine staying overnight there? I wonder if Disney arranged for things to “go bump” while the family was there? You know, make it extra spooky… heh heh heh!

So, how much longer before other buildings in other parks are selected as overnight treats or else actual, regularly offered accommodations? The first place I thought of was the “castle” in EPCOT’s O, Canada! pavilion. I’ve written about it before – see That “other” Disney castle. It is, after all, modeled after a hotel, the Château Laurier in Ottowa. However, like any other Disney building, it was architected using forced perspective, so the apparent 6 stories are really probably only 3 or 4. Cinderella’s Castle had to be similarly challenged; I bet what looks like two stories on the outside is really only one story on the inside.

Anyhow, I think I would like to stay in Disney World’s “other” castle overnight. And sneak out into the darkness in the dead of night so I can make a raid on the pretzel bread they serve in the Le Cellier Steakhouse nearby! 😀

If I knew what all these buttons were for, I’d be dangerous

IMG_2296-WDW-EPCOT-fireworks

:) These freakin’ buttons

on my cam’ra, but no clues

which for fireworks?

I’m pretty much an idiot for not reading the manual (“RTFM”, as we say in technology; the “F” is the same as in another popular acronyn, “FUBAR”). I get to the part where the pretty blue stuff is in the air and I realize I’ve got a camera in my hand that I’ve not really tried with fireworks before. Therefore, I have NO CLUE what setting it wants. There’s one that looks like a guy with a star over his head, so I pick that one. Uh-uh, blurry mess. Then there’s one that looks like a party in a cornucopia – all these streamers and confetti things coming out of it. While I don’t know what that one is for (yeah, I’ve been home for three days and I’ve not sought the manual yet), I do know it took a better photo of fireworks than the star-hovering-over-the-stick-dude setting did. If you dig it, they will come – “Santiva”, Florida

Flowing through Blind Pass
it’s water under the bridge –
lots of fishes, too!

Florida’s fabulous cloud formations float above the newly-dredged Blind Pass, a waterway between the islands of Sanibel and Captiva in Southwest Florida. The area is sometimes affectionately referred to as “Santiva”. The Pass is something of a marvel to my eyes. Before moving to Southwest Florida in 2006, I had been vacationing on Sanibel annually for several years and never saw more than puddles under the bridge.

Now, thanks to the Army Corps of Engineers, a swift current swirls through the Pass, and the local news is currently reporting abundances of mackerel, kingfish – and sharks! If you look closely, you can see several heads bobbing out there in the mouth of the pass. I’m betting they haven’t read the local news lately… 😯

Some of you with sharp eyes may also have noticed that in addition to fishes, the Pass also attracts a species known as “militant shellers”. Bonus points if you know who they are! ;o)

My Niece No. 2 and I are peas in a pod when it comes to leisure activities. While vacationing together on Sanibel Island this past July, we would have dinner each night and then happily tether to the 3G on my cell phone, each with her own laptop, geeking out to all manner of websites, social media and etc. And the first night we were there, we were so very happily geeking, we almost missed the sunset! As soon as we realized, we raced out there and snapped a few pictures, then raced back inside our cottage before the no-see-ums could do any major damage.

I love the color palette, shapes and textures of the Japan pavilion in Walt Disney World’s EPCOT theme park. There are the slopes and angles of the blue pagoda-shaped roofs, the prickly puffs of needles on the pines (some of them are bonsai), and earthy brown tones sprinkled throughout. There are usually a few spots around the koi pond where you can grab some shade and rest a bit in these peaceful surroundings.

Australian pines seem to love the sandy soil and subtropical climate of Sanibel Island, but their shallow root system ensures that they are very easily uprooted during a hurricane, causing destruction when they fall on cars, houses and other structures. It’s amazing there are any left on the island, but they soldier on, somehow.

Characters In Flight, Downtown Disney

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

06142009776-WDW-DTD-adventurers-club-balloon

:) A new attraction
floats above an old nightclub –
Characters In Flight

It’s a bittersweet scene. One of Downtown Disney’s newest attractions hovers over Pleasure Island’s oldest attraction. The Adventurer’s Club is closed, along with all of Pleasure Island’s other night clubs. Back in April, I bid a belated farewell to Pleasure Island, explaining that Disney had chosen to close the clubs in favor of more “family friendly” entertainment. The new Characters In Flight attraction could qualify as “family friendly”. It looks like a lot of fun. When I was there a few weeks ago, I decided not to go by myself; there was no fear factor involved, I just thought I’d have a better time with friends and/or family. So, if I attend the Moose Meet in October, I think I’m going to want to drag some of my fellow Mooses along – who’s game? Who wants to come fly with me? C’mon, you KNOW you want to! 😉

This way to EPCOT!

That’s the bridge between the United Kingdom pavilion and the France pavilion at EPCOT, as seen from the hill you have to walk up when you enter via the International Gateway.

My recent trip to Walt Disney World for the Flower and Garden Festival coincided with the beginning of rainy season here in Florida. It rained nearly every day of the trip. That’s ok, Florida really needs the rain. There have been droughts and the inevitable grass kill and brush fires that follow. I kind of feel sorry for people who booked their vacations in Orlando that week… but sorta not really, because I’d rather have it rain on people’s vacations, including mine, than see the entire state burn to a crisp.

Only five more days.
Then, margarita in hand
I’ll be watching this!

Yep, it’s time – I’m going to Disney World!

No, you’re not seeing things. I’ve published this same scene before. But each time, it’s different because the sky is always changing. It’s a routine in which I like to indulge when I’m at EPCOT – get a mango margarita, grab a seat down by lagoon across from the Mexico pavilion, and enjoy the magnificent sunset glinting off the water, streaking the sky with multi-colored clouds. Ahhh… :)

So, Tuesday will be my first night at Walt Disney World, and I have a dilemma. I don’t want to miss the finale of The Biggest Loser. I’m hoping that Tara wins – GO, TARA! Nice Lawn Guyland girl LOL 😉 Anyway, I digress. I’ll be in Disney World, and the show starts at 8:00 PM, but the sun will be setting close to 8:00 PM too…. what’s a girl to do? Ack, decisions! 😯

I’ll be mobile photo blogging from Disney World starting Tuesday May 12th… hope you’ll drop by now and then to see what I’m up to. :)

Strolling into the EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival

IMG_0576-EPCOT-Flower-Garden-Festival-sign :) Here we are at the EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival again. Can you tell that I’m starting to get excited for my upcoming trip to Orlando? 😉 Woops, I need to tell the story in haiku – here we go!

This sign speaks the truth –
Disney loves a festival
AND a celebration!

It’s so true – every year, they think up some reason or another to have a hullabaloo, so you’ll feel like you’re missing something if you don’t make the pilgrimage. Pretty clever marketing, huh?

IMG_0577-EPCOT-Classic-Characters-topiary
Look! the gang’s all here
Mickey, Minnie and the rest
greet us at the gate.

Spaceship Earth reflects
patterned slivers of blue skies;
geospheric orb

I love the way the facets of the geosphere capture little pieces of sky. It can be a harsh-looking structure when the sky is cloudy and gray, but blue really softens it as a backdrop for these classic Disney characters in topiary.

IMG_0588-EPCOT-Pluto-topiaryHere’s Pluto with the monorail track behind him and some more of that amazing blue Orlando sky. I want you to look REALLY closely at Pluto. What do you notice about him, hmmmm?

Isn’t Pluto cool? 8)
Guess what Pluto’s secret is?
(Look at his collar…)

So, did you see what I wanted you to see? Or maybe you didn’t… I will give you a hint as to what you are looking for. These photos are from the 2005 Flower and Garden Festival, which had a very specific theme. I’ll wait while you click that and look for the clue…. oh, good, you’re back. Are you tired of squinting? I’ll give you another hint – in fact, I will give you something to CLICK so you can see a close-up. Then, if you please, c’mon back here to the comments section, and tell me what you found!

Retail Therapy Skies Over Fort Myers, Florida

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

IMG_0386-sky-reflected-Crispers-windowI was out and about this weekend doing some retail therapy, and at some point on Sunday afternoon, I decided that I was hungry. So I stopped at one of my favorite casual places, Crispers. The menu is based around fresh produce, and all of their salads and sandwiches are cold, crisp and delicious. I always sit outside, and while I was waiting for my food, I spotted some puffy clouds in the window of the restaurant. I am sure that people thought I was an idiot, taking pictures of the side entrance of Crispers. A lot of you reading this are photo meme junkies too, so I bet that experience is not unique 😉

IMG_0391-sky-in-parking-lotAfter my delicious lunch, I moved across the parking lot to Barnes and Noble side of this sprawling suburban shopping center. By this time, those very clouds that had been reflected in the restaurant window had bloomed quite nicely, and I thought they looked pretty neat hovering over the trees that provide the all-important but too few and far between shaded parking spots :) And there I was again, the idiot standing in the middle of the parking lot taking pictures of the sky! 😀

PS – Drat, I nearly forgot to haiku!

There she goes again –
taking pics of gawd knows what!

Sanibel Skies Over Fragile Marine Ecosystems

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

Tranquil blues and whites
do not always reflect Truth.
Truth can lurk unseen…

IMG_0623-Sanibel-Ding-DarlingI’ve read that all it takes is one single mangrove pod in the right place under the right conditions to blossom into a mangrove island. The evidence can be seen at the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which covers a significant portion of the north side of Sanibel Island. The area is part of a larger marine ecosystem which is called the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The complex includes other refuges such as the Caloosahatchee, Matlacha (matt-luh-SHAY), Island Bay up in Charlotte County, and Pine Island.

IMG_0592-Sanibel-Mangroves-CloudsThe state of Florida recently received an “iffy” report card, which rated the state’s efforts at protecting marine life with a lot of Ds (“A” being the highest grade). This means there is lots of room for improvement in our policies and laws that govern the use and abuse of ecosystems that have an impact on these wildlife refuges. It’s not enough to have laws that only pertain to the refuges; since everything is connected, actions in the middle of the state eventually produce a downstream effect on delicate marine environments such as these.

I’m looking forward to seeing some earnest effort on the part of the state legislature toward cleaning up Florida’s act, so that subsequent report cards reflect an increase in the amount of respect we afford our natural systems.

IMG_0292-moon-palm-clouds-Sanibel-Island
Rustling palm fronds sway
Feathery against the sky
Whisp’ring to the moon

Gray and wispy veil
The chill of night encroaches
Day is fading fast

Wolves would surely howl
A cloud, a shroud draws closer
La Luna Obscura

I’m pretty sure that wolves probably never lived on Sanibel Island, at least not since the advent of the internet (go on, google it…. I’ll wait….. ok, satisfied? 😀 ). However, if wolves DID live on Sanibel Island, they would have been HOWLING last week! The moon was just stunning in the east, as the sun set in the west. As twilight closed in, a whispy gray cloud drifted by, obscuring La Luna Bella for the briefest of moments. When the veil lifted, the sun had set, and it was time to get in the Sad Lane and go home.

Looky, I Gots Friends :) :) :)

Respectively, that was the sun rising behind the WDW Swan hotel, the sun reflecting off the front of the WDW Dolphin hotel, and my fellow Long Island transplants watching the SpectroMagic parade in the Magic Kingdom that evening – Barbara, Austin, Lexie and Debbie In Paradise.

Hey, did you spot the “hidden” Mickey heads?

Six Mile Cypress Sky

Sky so blue and clouds
so puffy, filtered through the
branches of the trees
.

SIX MILE CYPRESS SLOUGH is a beautiful strip of wetland woods that isn’t actually six miles – it’s about nine miles long and maybe a third of a mile wide.  The slough (pronouced “slew”, rhymes with “you” – yeah, I had to look it up!) runs alongside Six Mile Cypress Parkway, just north of Daniels Parkway in Fort Myers.  Migratory birds like to take a pit-stop here to fatten up for their long journeys hither and yon.  People come to walk through the preserve, which you might think is icky if you didn’t know that they’ve built a raised boardwalk so you’re not slogging through the swamp.  😀

I use Six Mile Cypress Parkway when I am driving to or coming home from Sanibel Island, and I always pass the sign that advertises the days of the week and the times for the guided nature walks, and think to myself that I’m going to have to play sick one of these work days and just go and do it!  I think I will ring up my friend Snowbird for this particular adventure, as she has expressed interest in the past.  I’ve been through there by myself, in the hot muggy summertime; this photo was taken in the Slough July 25th 2005, which was the trip I made down here to go house hunting.  I had to wear a ton of bug spray, and my tour ended when the skies opened up and let loose a torrential summer rain, so typical of this area during rainy season.  Yep, gonna have to do this soon, before the temps turn sultry and the air turns buggy again.

And after we do that, maybe I’ll play hookey again and we’ll do the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary down in Naples, Florida.   😉  It’s an Audubon site!

Ev’ning colors streak

the sky and the pond reflects

it all perfectly.

I feel really terrible for some of my friends, who are enduring yet another storm with disgusting, vile forms of precipitation piling up outside.   Each time I publish a photo like this, I worry that they think I am rubbing their noses in the fact that winter is not Florida’s time for disgusting, vile precipitation; we wait for summer hurricane season for that!  So, a couple of weeks ago when many of them were down here visiting Sanibel Island, I presented them with their very own Executive Mini Sandbox, Beach Break And so, to Anne in New England and Kaki in the Midwest, and to Kim and Derice in the Mid-Atlantic states, I hope you will remember to break out the sandbox, bury some miniatures shells in the sand, and take comfort in a little pseudo-shelling and dreaming.
