Why #SWFlorida needs rain – desperately!

I’m standing on my lanai, which faces precisely west. says this is burning at Ortiz Avenue, which is maybe 4 miles from my home. As more and more time passes without precipitation and the drought deepens, more and more brush fires are happening.

This post is sticky – scroll down for today’s mobile photo blogging

It’s official – I’m sick!  Boy does this suck.  I let myself sleep late and now I’m going in search of brunch.  The sore throat is gone and now we are up to the part where you lie on one side and you get cement on that side of your face.  So you turn over and lie on the other side, and the cement slowly transfers itself to that side.  If you catch it at the right moment, just as it is crossing over, you can probably manage to expel it via Kleenex, but then more cement just comes to take its place.

Even though this pretty much sucks, I’m still going to the Magic Kingdom today.  I will probably take it very easy and just dig the atmosphere and sunshine.  It is 73* here in Orlando at the moment.  Hopefully the weather will remain pleasant.

OK, that’s it for now.  Brunch, and then Magic Kingdom.  See ya real soon!

We interrupt this Blogless Thursday for some silliness and fun!

What Do You Call A Lack Of Blogless?
I’ve been trying to take Thursdays off from serious blogging by posting all manner of silliness. Today we have half silliness and the other half something really super cool!

I have been tagged with a meme. Actually, it is two memes. The first one was optional, but I’m doing it anyway. Both memes came from Jientje at Heaven In Belgium. Jientje takes the most amazing photographs of her hometown in Belgium, as well as places like Provence and Normandy. She is the first blogger I subscribed to from Wordless Wednesday; I had to, her photos are beautiful and I didn’t want to miss any!

Silliness: Google Game
So the first meme, which was optional but looks like fun, is a Google game. The rules: All you have to do is Google your first name with the word “needs” after it, and post the first 10 results. Don’t forget to tag people (if you are the tagging sort)! Here goes….

TINK NEEDS (I left out the *~*~* so not as to confuse Google):

1.a creative team
2.Love’s photo on Imeem
5.a ton of pixie dust
6.a home
8.a leash
9.Peter all to herself
10.a dubee

1. I do have a creative team at work. They are very good at analyzing business issues and coming up with unique solutions.
2. I do have an account on Imeem but I have no clue what “Love’s photo” is!
3. and 4. Does anyone besides me find the sequence of search results as hilarious as I do? 😀
5. While I firmly believe that there can never be too much pixie dust, I also know that stuff is potent, so a little dab’ll do ya!
6. Hmmm, I already have a home. Moved into it brand new over two years ago.
7. Isn’t it cool that two of the Beatles biggest hits had the word “help” featured prominently in the lyrics?
8. I do not have a doggie, therefore I’ve no need for a leash. If the leash is for me, well, good luck with that!
9. You know, I think I came to the conclusion some time ago that the absolute dead LAST thing I need is a Lost Boy all to myself. Insert sarcastic smiley here!
10. First of all, I believe it is spelled “doobie”, but then again, maybe I am just old-fashioned. Why, when I was a young ‘un, we had to spell “doobie” 5 miles, uphill BOTH ways, in the pouring rain, with no shoes! These kids these days, with their newfangled “dubee” – bah!

Ok, that was fun! If you liked that one, consider yourself tagged!

I was quite surprised and honored to be tagged with this one. Apparently, I am now the proud owner of a BFF Gold Card! Here are the rules, as passed to me by Jientje –

1. You have to tag 5 people.
2. (4) have to be dedicated followers of your blog
3. One has to be someone new or recently new to your blog
and must live in another part of the world.
4. You must link back to whomever gave you the award.

Decisions, decisions!
Actually, the first few are easy.

Mare, whose blog is called Making Memories, has been, hands down, my most enthusiastic commenter. And she also has a really darling family with a terrific sense of fun. And they are Disney fans, every last one of them. What’s not to like about Mare and her happy family? 😀 I think I infected her with the mobile blogging bug. I hope her child will forgive Auntie Tink *~*~* for that someday….

Then there is Tootie, who not only follows me around Walt Disney World while I am mobile blogging (to the point where I try to take pics of weird things to throw her off balance, but don’t tell her I said that), she also performs a valuable service to the community of Sanibel by doing the turtle walk each Sunday and then blogging about it, thus educating the public. If you want to know what a turtle walk is all about, first-hand, you simply must drop by and have a read at Turtle Talk With Tootie You can also find out about the program in general by visiting the SCCF – Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation

Speaking of service to Sanibel, my next BFF is Snowbird, who volunteers her time at C.R.O.W. (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife and blogs about it at Sand Between My Toes The work she does for the wildlife clinic includes going out on rescues, feeding baby birds, and generally keeping the critters out of mischief long enough to heal. I am often quite tuckered out just reading how her day went. Snowbird has also been known to follow me around in real time while I’m mobile blogging. She’s on vacation just now, and I’m anxious for her to return to Southwest Florida so I can actually meet the woman face to face!

Breaking Da Rulz
OK, so here is the deal. I am having SUCH a hard time deciding number 5, that being the person who is new/recent follower and lives in another part of the world. So, we are going to take a hatchet to number 4 and give out TWO number 5 awards!

Yes, there are TWO fellow bloggers who both qualify, and I can’t decide, so they are both getting it. Sorry, I know I am breaking the rules (those of you who know me IRL are rolling your eyes and thinking, “well, quelle surprise!”), but not really, because I am still keeping it to five.

OK, so the people who are far away in another part of the world are – Elaine of Singapore and Gayle of Alaska!

Elaine’s blog is APAD (a photo a day), and I love to drop by there daily, because you never know what you’re going to get. One day it’s a man praying, the next day it’s giant bugs. I especially like when she takes her photos from unique angles. She’s got a great eye, and I thoroughly enjoy visiting her each day. She also has quite a sense of humor, and I equally enjoy trading funny Comments with her.

Gayle’s blog is called The White House, and I have to admit that what drew me to her blog initially was the name (those of you who know me IRL are rolling your eyes and thinking, “well, quelle surprise!”. If you don’t cut that out, your face is gonna freeze that way. I’m just sayin’…). So I was drawn by the name, but then I stayed for the horticultural adventure. Imagine racing against time to get the most amazing array of gardens planted because you live in Alaska and the growing season is short, short, short! Alaska is beautiful. Gayle calls it “living the dream”; I think we can safely say that we are polar opposites, since I too am living my dream, but in warm, humid, sun-shiny Florida instead!

So that’s it – that’s my array of blogging friends who are recipients of the Blogging Friends Forever award. I want to hurry up and get tagged with another award-type meme so I can spread the joy some more. Jientje was right – it is really HARD to chose between your blogging buddies! There are SO many more that could have gotten that number 5 slot. In fact, I might do this over next week and fill it with number 5 types from all over the world. Now, THERE’S an idea!

OK ladies – here’s your GOLD CARD. Now, don’t leave home without it. Or maybe it’s everywhere you want to be. Um, for everything else, there’s Master… no that’s not it either. OK, just enjoy it, and have fun tagging others with it! 😀

It’s The Geekend! – No, Apple Did Not Invent Mobile Blogging

No, Apple Did NOT Invent Mobile Blogging

I have a Google search set up to come into my Google Reader as an RSS feed. The search is simply, “Mobile Blogging”. When I first set it up several months ago, I was probably getting between 1 and 3 hits daily. In the advent of the second coming of iPhone, I am now inundated with blog entries that all start like one of these –

“My iPhone is a mobile blogging tool!”

“Mobile blogging in the iPhone style”

iPhone apps 4 mobile blogging FTW”

“So I’m trying out the mobile blogging with my new iPhone.”

“I’ve got myself a mobile blogging platform in the iPhone

“I am posting with my iPhone using the new WordPress app.” “Got the iPhone wordpress app going. Time to start mobile blogging. Yay! More pointless chatter”

“This is kind of neat. Maybe there is an actual use for the iPhone.”

Those last two left me rolling! But, I trust you get the idea.

I’ve been mobile blogging since October 2007. In fact, I set up my Blogger blog specifically for the purpose of mophoblogging (mobile photo blogging) from Walt Disney World. I like to kid myself that the 24 hour post quantity limitation and subsequent captcha control was implemented because of people like me, trying to help the folks stuck home get a Disney fix by literally following me around the parks all day. There were a couple of days when I sent more than 50 photo posts to the blog from my Motorola RIZR.

Now, in the grand scheme of things, mophoblogging since October 2007 – 9 months, give or take – is not very long. It doesn’t exactly make me the elder stateswoman in this arena, or anything like that. However, in this day and age where social media startups happen every day, and when technology is outmoded the minute you purchase it, that’s probably a long time to be doing the same thing using the same services and mostly the same equipment.

These brand-new iPhone 3G owners are acting like they are pioneers of mobile blogging – like it’s some new thing that the iPhone 3G introduced to the world. The fact is, mobile blogging existed well before the iPhone 3G was little more than a rumor. Why, when I was a kid, we had to mobile blog uphill, both ways, in three feet of snow – with a MotoRIZR!

So – iPhone 3G users, hear ye – get over yourselves! Mobile blogging / mophoblogging is not an innovation of the Apple iPhone 3G. You don’t even have a really good camera on that thing with which to do it! Have fun doing it, but know this – Apple didn’t invent it.

Actually, I shouldn’t be yelling at you. One of my very good cyber friends just got an iPhone 3G for her birthday, and I’m happy for her. It’s something she really wanted, and she should play with it in good health! She’s also a very savy social media type and is well aware that mobile blogging has been around for considerably longer than her new toy has. However, judging from the posts of wonderment and amazement coming across the Google Reader from some of the other new iPhone 3G owners, banannie is the exception.

It’s not the typical iPhone 3G owner’s fault that even SOCIAL media can tend to pick up mostly the big boys’ balls and run with them. Just look at how much coverage the 3G got at it’s release. You could not read anything anywhere without bumping into more hype – as in, hyperventilating – about the iPhone 3G. So it is probably the fault of the media, even social media, that many of you knew next to nothing about the existence of mobile blogging until Apple decided to release a 3G device that takes ok photos, AND 400 bazillion 3rd parties decided to make mobile apps for it – amongst which are “mobile blogging apps” for WordPress and Typepad blogs.

FYI: you could ALWAYS mobile blog from a phone that can do email or SMS text messaging. You didn’t need 3G or these “mobile blogging apps” installed on your mobile device. You didn’t even need a smart phone!

So now, when my Google search on “mobile blogging” starts overflowing Reader with messages that contain that phrase alongside the word “iPhone”, I have to laugh. Have fun with your iPhone. Enjoy it! It’s a neat little toy. Not as neat as the N95 (still saving…. stay tuned!), but really cool. But just know that it’s not sliced bread. That loaf was cut long before the iPhone 3G was a twinkle in Steve Jobs eye.

You heard it here first – "mophoblogging"! OK, maybe not…

“Mophoblogging” – take a wild guess! Yeah, that’s “mobile photo blogging” all mashed up.

I thought I’d made up this phrase, but if you Google it, you will find I was mistaken

Google search on “mophoblogging”

Drat. I have missed my chance to become famous amongst the bloggerati by coining a phrase.

Yes, I know. This and 3 bucks would have gotten me on the subway. 😀
