Canada’s “castle”
What’s inside? I often wonder
Could someone live there?
There’s a suite upstairs in Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom now. Every so often, you hear about someone winning a night in the suite; eventually, I guess Disney will open it up for regular stay bookings (although, I don’t know how that would work if you decided to go out at night and return after the park is closed).
Recently, Disney allowed one lucky family to stay overnight at the Haunted Mansion, also in the Magic Kingdom. Can you imagine staying overnight there? I wonder if Disney arranged for things to “go bump” while the family was there? You know, make it extra spooky… heh heh heh!
So, how much longer before other buildings in other parks are selected as overnight treats or else actual, regularly offered accommodations? The first place I thought of was the “castle” in EPCOT’s O, Canada! pavilion. I’ve written about it before – see That “other” Disney castle. It is, after all, modeled after a hotel, the Château Laurier in Ottowa. However, like any other Disney building, it was architected using forced perspective, so the apparent 6 stories are really probably only 3 or 4. Cinderella’s Castle had to be similarly challenged; I bet what looks like two stories on the outside is really only one story on the inside.
Anyhow, I think I would like to stay in Disney World’s “other” castle overnight. And sneak out into the darkness in the dead of night so I can make a raid on the pretzel bread they serve in the Le Cellier Steakhouse nearby!

These freakin’ buttons
on my cam’ra, but no clues
which for fireworks?
I’m pretty much an idiot for not reading the manual (“RTFM”, as we say in technology; the “F” is the same as in another popular acronyn, “FUBAR”). I get to the part where the pretty blue stuff is in the air and I realize I’ve got a camera in my hand that I’ve not really tried with fireworks before. Therefore, I have NO CLUE what setting it wants. There’s one that looks like a guy with a star over his head, so I pick that one. Uh-uh, blurry mess. Then there’s one that looks like a party in a cornucopia – all these streamers and confetti things coming out of it. While I don’t know what that one is for (yeah, I’ve been home for three days and I’ve not sought the manual yet), I do know it took a better photo of fireworks than the star-hovering-over-the-stick-dude setting did. Photo taken with a Canon Powershot SX110IS during “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth”, the nightly fireworks and multimedia show held at EPCOT in Walt Disney World

Flowing through Blind Pass
it’s water under the bridge –
lots of fishes, too!
Florida’s fabulous cloud formations float above the newly-dredged Blind Pass, a waterway between the islands of Sanibel and Captiva in Southwest Florida. The area is sometimes affectionately referred to as “Santiva”. The Pass is something of a marvel to my eyes. Before moving to Southwest Florida in 2006, I had been vacationing on Sanibel annually for several years and never saw more than puddles under the bridge.
Now, thanks to the Army Corps of Engineers, a swift current swirls through the Pass, and the local news is currently reporting abundances of mackerel, kingfish – and sharks! If you look closely, you can see several heads bobbing out there in the mouth of the pass. I’m betting they haven’t read the local news lately…
Some of you with sharp eyes may also have noticed that in addition to fishes, the Pass also attracts a species known as “militant shellers”. Bonus points if you know who they are! ;o)

Looks like the sails of
a tall ship in the distance;
when will it set sail?
My obsession with the Sunshine Skyway continues. If I can find a place to pull over and shoot, I do. Otherwise I just keep my eyes on the road, point the lens in the general direction and pray
Not bad, huh? Have a happy and productive Friday, everyone!

Castle ‘cross the lake

It’s a Disney day!
No, it’s not the one in the Magic Kingdom – it’s the one in the Canada pavilion in EPCOT. It’s modeled after a hotel in Ottawa called Chateau Laurier. I think it makes a pretty picture, don’t you?
Happy Friday, everyone!
