One of the “lands” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is Camp Minnie Mickey. There isn’t a whole lot that goes on there these days, now that the live animal show with Pocahontas
has been discontinued. At this point, the only reason to go to Camp Minnie Mickey, really, is to see Festival of the Lion King, a Broadway-quality musical review of songs from The Lion King movies.
Look to the sides of the path that leads to the theater and you will find many of the beloved classic Disney characters engaged in a variety of outdoor leisure activities. Let’s see who I found there during my most recent trip to Walt Disney World!
Looks like Donald has made quite a catch today, but I’m not sure that particular item will taste very good breaded and fried! Normally, Donald wears a sailor hat, but today he’s wearing the type of hat you can pin lures to, so you don’t lose them. Donald’s bill and feet are yellow, and his jacket is blue – but you will note that Donald Duck wears no pants!
This is really sort of odd. Of all the classic Disney characters, the only one who is not anthropomorphic is Pluto. That’s because he’s actually supposed to be Mickey’s pet, so he is not typically represented with any human characteristics. So, aside from Pluto, all the other classic characters wear clothing, like humans do. But Donald is the odd man out – he is NAKEY from the waist down! Apparently, this is one of the great mysteries of Disney – even the Disney company itself does not seem to know WHY Donald wears no pants.

Look at those colors. Look at those wings! These are scarlet macaws, one of the more colorful parrots that are native to the New World. They’re shown here with a Cast Member at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, who had stopped by to check their feed and ended up sticking around to answer questions and interact with the birds. The first time I laid eyes on a scarlet macaw, I didn’t quite believe that these were their natural colors. It just sort of reminded me of the 80s, when seemingly every teenager I passed on the streets of New York City had used Jell-O to add patches of color to their hair.
However, I quickly came to discover that the scarlet macaw, so called because the predominant color is red, comes naturally by all these colors. I love the yellow on the underside of the wings, and the blue down the sides. There are some subspecies that are differentiated by how wide the yellow band is, or whether or not green is present in the plummage.
The scarlet macaw is a native of humid, subtropical locations in Central and South America, and is the national bird of Honduras. Deforestation and pesticides have drastically reduced their numbers in recent decades. Hunting/capture/sale is illegal in many countries, except for very specific, permitted circumstances.
Scarlet macaws can be found in singles, pairs or sometimes in large flocks. The more remote the location, such as sparsely populated islands in Central America, the bigger the flocks tend to be. They nest in hollows of trees, and their young stay with them for well longer than a year before striking out on their own. I was amazed to learn that they can live to be up to 75 years old! They are very social when they are in captivity and like interacting with their people.

It’s a a day just like any other day in the beautiful German alps. A gentle breeze sets the pines a-whispering amongst themselves. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and a single, blue passenger car serenely makes its way along the alpine train tracks, little suspecting what insidious dangers lurk ahead…
What a pretty and quaint train station! OK, so the dead truck isn’t very attractive… but the buildings are a lovely pale yellow and the railroad staff stand ready to attend to the passengers, looking so smart and spiffy in their uniforms… but wait! What’s this I see? OH NO!
IT’S A GIANT LIZARD! This horrible beast has apparently felled one person already (the unfortunate soul lying face-down by the tracks) and now it lies in wait on the roof of the station, ready to pounce upon the unsuspecting villagers as they disembark from the train.
RUN, UNSUSPECTING VILLAGERS – RUN!
(in case you hadn’t already guessed – just like Part 1, this is also the model train set-up at the German pavilion in EPCOT).

The very first time I drove from my house in Southwest Florida to Walt Disney World, I was on the phone with Lisa, a good friend from Long Island. As I got closer to Disney property, I saw this structure – Lisa calls it “the pearly gates”
– and I let out a scream for joy. “OW!” Lisa exclaimed. “That was my EAR!”.
Ever since that incident, I still call Lisa to pass the time during the 3-hour drive to Disney – but she always asks, “Are we getting close to the pearly gates? Cause if we are, I have to hang up now!”

Driving on Fort Myers Beach is not a very appealing thought during busy beach times. The main drag is one lane in each direction and is easily overwhelmed with traffic. An alternative is to park in the Winn Dixie parking lot on Summerlin and San Carlos, and take the trolley. You still get stuck in traffic, but at least you’re not the one being aggravated by driving. You can read or sleep or chatter with your fellow travelers. And it’s green – reduces your carbon footprint to take mass transit. There are very few mass transit opportunities in this area, so why not take advantage of this one?

This little fountain is located on the promenade between FutureWorld and the World Showcase in Walt Disney World’s EPCOT theme park. The colorful, swirly pattern painted on the concrete includes both blue and yellow. During a day of touring under the hot Florida sun, the refreshing fun that such cool-off spots provide is very much welcome. As the kids run through, the fountains start and stop; you never know when you’re going to get sprayed. In the background, you can see a couple of misters have been set up for the adults. As you stand there, a fine mist dampens your skin and your clothing, and the breeze comes along to cool you off. I have occasionally seen adults running through the fountains and kiddies getting misted. Nobody minds, they just want to cool off!

There are two parts to to the EPCOT theme park in Walt Disney World. The front of the park is known as “Future World”; there’s lots of stuff there related to the sciences and new technological advances. The other part of EPCOT is known as the “World Showcase”. Pavilions are arranged around a lagoon. Visiting these pavilions is known as “doing the country walk. If you go left coming from Future World to walk around the lagoon, you will start with Mexico. But if you go right, you start with Canada, cruise through the United Kingdom, cross the International Gateway and then you are in France.
This is pretty much my favorite pavilion to visit on the country walk. Great food and wine can be had here, not to mention the almighty Grand Marnier slushie! Look, we’ve arrived at the little shop that sells wine by the glass or by the bottle, and also French cook books, kitchen utensils and dry goods. Let’s go inside!
Perhaps this is yet another reason why I like the French pavilion in EPCOT. Blue and yellow are my favorite color combination. Unfortunately, this stuff doesn’t really go with anything in my house. My yellows are more Tuscan, and my blues are more cobalt I do still love looking at these Provençal patterns. There is something about them that speaks of the aroma of fresh bread and the sound of the rooster crowing. Oh, and the entire shop smells like lavender! Can you imagine going to Provence and driving past those fields brimming with orderly rows of bushy, blooming lavendar – with the windows down? Heaven!

I took some photos at EPCOT recently that I thought would be great for Blue Monday and Mellow Yellow Monday. I thought I’d just tuck them away in the vault somewhere, hoping that an appropriate prompt for Manic Monday would someday be declared, and then I could use them for my Monday Meme Trifecta.
Well, I must have ESPN
or clairvoyance or something. Either that, or I’m very, very lucky, for Mo declared that today’s prompt is “ROCK” – w00t!
About two weeks ago, I stood in the Outpost, a little African section of the World Showcase at EPCOT, browsing the hats and jewelry and carved objects, when my eyes fell on this bin of rocks and semi-precious stones.

So what, you say? Well, check out what was in upper-middle bin!

Three of ‘em, cause it’s a TRIfecta, after all.
Hearts mean love, so this is ME, sending lots of LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to all of YOU who read here. Now, run along with you all, have a FABULOUS Monday and don’t forget to pay the LOVE forward <3 <3 <3

For the Monday Meme Trifecta this week, we start with the word “pop” as a prompt, and add a little yellow and a little blue. That’s how we play all three memes at the same time!
Here’s the entrance to Disney’s POP Century resort in Orlando, Florida. This is one of Walt Disney World’s “value” resorts – the least expensive of the Disney resorts. The Pop Century resort is themed in sections that represent the decades of the 20th century. The entire resort is decorated in colorful representations of the popular culture of the times, represented in music, art, film and even the dominant news items of the times. I’ve stayed there twice – once in the 1950s section, and once in the 1970s section. These photos are from the 1970s visit.
