My Mobile Adventures *~*~* Gets Facelift; Woody’s A Witness

Anyone who has ever worked under the hood on a website will get this.
So, someone brings a technical glitch-type problem to my attention, and off I go, under the hood to investigate. I try a bunch of things and post to a forum I know of for help and ultimately figure out that the theme I’m using doesn’t support what they all agree I need to do in order to fix the problem.

Now, I’ve been meaning to re-theme My Mobile Adventures *~*~* for quite some time; I’ve wanted more of a magazine look and feel, but other stuff always seems to get prioritized over “re-theme website”. As if by magic here’s this golden opportunity to fix a glitch by getting a new theme. It’s Friday night, and I have a cold so I’m staying in anyway. I just know that if I put my head down on the pillow, my nose is gonna clog like cement, so it’s best to remain upright… and before I know it, I’ve identified, downloaded, installed and tweaked a new theme.

The irony is that the thing that everyone thought would solve the issue turned out to be not the thing at all! I quite-by-accident discovered the real issue and resolved it, but only AFTER the new theme was installed.

What does all this have to do with Woody from Disney’s Toy Story? Nothing much, except he is here at my desk pretty much all the time, bearing witness to all the cussin’ and a-fussin’ that goes on when I’m trying to resolve some sort of technical glitch-type problem

Don’t go getting any ideas into your head about pocketing and making off with him. As you can see, I’ve taken a note from Andy’s book and stamped him with my personal brand 😉

  1. You’ve jumped into the “read more” group of bloggers! 🙂 It’s quite a trend for blogs with ads. Wish I was a blog with ads making some money for doing something I love. I, mean, I do something I love (parenting), but the pay is a little sketchy. 🙂 Glad you got your technical hassles worked out and you can move on to enjoying the weekend!

  2. Hey Gayle – sadly, the blog does not make a whole lot of money. It makes barely enough to cover my blogging expenses (hosting, Flickr Pro account) each year. I’d definitely be living in a box on the side of the road if I depended on the blog for income LOL 😉

  3. When people were hitting the “like” button, a link would pop up on Facebook – “SoandSo likes this” but the photo that would accompany the link was some random thing from the sidebar, and there was no controlling what photo got used. So people were “liking” MY blog but getting a picture of, for instance, another blogger from the blogroll that used to be in the sidebar (sometimes it was even Gayle ha ha ha!). So I purged all those photos and it was STILL using them – there was a cache somewhere on the server that had to clear itself. After that, I did some more testing and it started using Gravatar images. I turned off the setting to use a Gravatar and now there are no images with “like” links at all any more. That doesn’t really solve the problem but it appears to be a Facebook development issue that tries to pull these photos randomly. The “share” function does not behave this way – it gives you a scroll-through option to pick from a bunch of images it finds on the page. I think maybe they need to do that for the “like” button too, or else find a way to pull an image ONLY from the post itself – otherwise it’s just random and totally irrelevant.

now that this reply is longer than the post itself… 😉

  4. Love the new theme. The techie stuff is mostly over my head. I’m the one with the wide eyes going, “OOOHHHH! Pretty!”

  5. NICE! I like the new theme a lot. I wish I was more “techie” and I felt like it was a big accomplishment even STARTING a blog and getting it to work. I have a LONG way to go….
