IMG_1442-WDW-DAK-Everest-reflectedBack in the early days of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, there was an attraction called Discovery River Boats, the purpose of which wasn’t really so much entertainment as it was to taxi the guests around the park via the river that winds around Discovery Island. There was a dock in Asia and another close to the entrance of the park, just after you emerge from the Oasis. These docks have been repurposed since the attraction shut down. The one in Asia is now a shaded sitting area to rest or eat, and the other one is a character meet-and-greet spot.

I sometimes find myself wishing that attraction still existed. It can be very pleasant to float along in a boat at Disney World, a peaceful respite during a busy day. And then I get a shot like this one, and I realize that it would not have been possible with boats running around disturbing the reflections.

A shrine made of stone sits by a quiet stream at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Anandapur is the name of the fictional village. In the real world, outside the 42 square miles upon which Disney built his Florida empire, there are two places called Anandapur. One of them is in India, and the other is in Bangladesh.

🙂 Call me a child of the 60s who watched too many sitcoms, but I thought this cloud looked like a genie coming out of the bottle! The fact that it is happening on the World Showcase in Disney’s EPCOT, right above Morocco, has not escaped me – that’s where Aladdin and Jasmine usually hang out to sign autographs and have their pictures taken with the crowd. So maybe it IS the Disney genie! 😉

Towers and tails – a twilight perspective

A view of the Walt Disney World Dolphin resort from the World Showcase in EPCOT. The dolphin sculptures on top of the resort wave their tails in the air. One is obscured by the Eiffel Tower from the French pavilion. Perspective makes it seem as though the Eiffel Tower stands right alongside the resort.

Here’s the map of the area in question. I think I was standing on the right at “F”, near Norway/China. The French pavilion is just to the left of “Restaurant Marakesh”, and the Walt Disney World Dolphin resort is further left. (NOTE: if you click to view the map larger, you will see Marakesh and the Dolphin labeled)

Crest O’ The Wave – scenes from Disney’s Boardwalk

http://MyMobileAdventures.com

🙂 There’s a “wedding pavilion” on Disney’s Boardwalk – well, I’ve never seen a wedding happening there, but it is the PERFECT spot for one. It’s a beautiful wooden structure with some wonderfully detailed arches that make a perfect frame for pictures. Since the lake that the Boardwalk follows is crescent-shaped, you can stand at one end, where the pavilion is, and photograph the other end. Here’s what my camera saw when I stood there on a blustery day in December. Enjoy!

I love the banks of the lagoons at EPCOT during the International Flower and Garden Festival, because of the all the fun shapes planted into the flower beds. I’ve seen hearts, stars, half-moons and of course, “hidden” Mickey heads. Last spring, the landscaping included two huge, red “hidden” Mickey heads in these locations. One was very close to the glass pyramids that house the Imagination! attraction. The other was quite close to the butterfly house on the other side of the park. Here we go – enjoy!

Photo taken with my Nokia E71 camera phone at Blind Pass, Captiva Island. It’s a little grainy, because the camera phone needs more light than this to be effective, but I liked the composition and the way the struggling sun seeps through the clouds to reflect on the water. My friend Christene and I stopped to see if the storm was bringing in any good shells, but it was too cold and windy to stay. December 5th, 2009

If you dig it, they will come – “Santiva”, Florida

Flowing through Blind Pass
it’s water under the bridge –
lots of fishes, too!

Florida’s fabulous cloud formations float above the newly-dredged Blind Pass, a waterway between the islands of Sanibel and Captiva in Southwest Florida. The area is sometimes affectionately referred to as “Santiva”. The Pass is something of a marvel to my eyes. Before moving to Southwest Florida in 2006, I had been vacationing on Sanibel annually for several years and never saw more than puddles under the bridge.

Now, thanks to the Army Corps of Engineers, a swift current swirls through the Pass, and the local news is currently reporting abundances of mackerel, kingfish – and sharks! If you look closely, you can see several heads bobbing out there in the mouth of the pass. I’m betting they haven’t read the local news lately… 😯

Some of you with sharp eyes may also have noticed that in addition to fishes, the Pass also attracts a species known as “militant shellers”. Bonus points if you know who they are! ;o)

I love the color palette, shapes and textures of the Japan pavilion in Walt Disney World’s EPCOT theme park. There are the slopes and angles of the blue pagoda-shaped roofs, the prickly puffs of needles on the pines (some of them are bonsai), and earthy brown tones sprinkled throughout. There are usually a few spots around the koi pond where you can grab some shade and rest a bit in these peaceful surroundings.

Illuminating look at EPCOT

On the lower right of the photo, you can see one of the Friendship boats I wrote about yesterday. It’s fun to note how accents like these lanterns can change in style as you make your way from one country to the next. Most of these lanterns are extinguished for the “Illuminations: Reflections of Earth” fireworks and media show that happens at 9:00 PM each evening.

Portrait of a militant sheller

IMG00286-Sanibel-Island-militant-sheller

❓ How can I tell this is a militant sheller? Well, for one thing, he’s carrying “the claw”, an implement of liberation and retrieval which exists in the toolkit of most serious seashell seekers.

Don’t bother googling for “the claw” – the actual name is The Treasure Scoop. Whatever you call it, it’s a handy device. You can use it to dig or else to fish something out of the water without having to perform the “Sanibel Stoop”.

The other reason I can tell this is a militant sheller is that I actually know him. Personally, even! 😉 Some of you reading this may even recognize him. How much trouble do we think I’m in for posting this? Personally, I think it’s a lovely shot and he’s going to like it. Well, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it! 😉

Australian pines seem to love the sandy soil and subtropical climate of Sanibel Island, but their shallow root system ensures that they are very easily uprooted during a hurricane, causing destruction when they fall on cars, houses and other structures. It’s amazing there are any left on the island, but they soldier on, somehow.

Not quite done with EPCOT’s fountain show

🙂 Yes, I know I published photos of the fountain show last Wednesday, too. But I’m not done checking it out! See, this was the first time I took my fairly new 9 megapixel, 10x optical zoom digital camera to Disney, and it’s like “a whole new world” of detail has opened up for me.

Here’s a shot I took of the fountain show in action but from the other perspective as compared to last week’s photos. The geosphere, also known as Spaceship Earth or “that big golf ball” is in the photo as well. Now we’re going to blow up just a small section of the photo –

IMG_1039-WDW-EPCOT-fountain-show-detail

I think what I like best about this is that there’s all kinds of texture going on – the nubby surface of the geosphere, the puffiness of the clouds, and the droplets of water from the fountain spraying wide like a fractured crystal… go ahead and click on the photo. When you get to Flickr, scroll down on the right and there should be an option to view different sizes. Try “large” to see all the textures.

Another beautiful EPCOT sunset

IMG_3650-WDW-EPCOT-Mexico-sunset-again

Only five more days.
Then, margarita in hand
I’ll be watching this!

Yep, it’s time – I’m going to Disney World!

No, you’re not seeing things. I’ve published this same scene before. But each time, it’s different because the sky is always changing. It’s a routine in which I like to indulge when I’m at EPCOT – get a mango margarita, grab a seat down by lagoon across from the Mexico pavilion, and enjoy the magnificent sunset glinting off the water, streaking the sky with multi-colored clouds. Ahhh… 🙂

So, Tuesday will be my first night at Walt Disney World, and I have a dilemma. I don’t want to miss the finale of The Biggest Loser. I’m hoping that Tara wins – GO, TARA! Nice Lawn Guyland girl LOL 😉 Anyway, I digress. I’ll be in Disney World, and the show starts at 8:00 PM, but the sun will be setting close to 8:00 PM too…. what’s a girl to do? Ack, decisions! 😯

I’ll be mobile photo blogging from Disney World starting Tuesday May 12th… hope you’ll drop by now and then to see what I’m up to. 🙂

Retail Therapy Skies Over Fort Myers, Florida

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

IMG_0386-sky-reflected-Crispers-windowI was out and about this weekend doing some retail therapy, and at some point on Sunday afternoon, I decided that I was hungry. So I stopped at one of my favorite casual places, Crispers. The menu is based around fresh produce, and all of their salads and sandwiches are cold, crisp and delicious. I always sit outside, and while I was waiting for my food, I spotted some puffy clouds in the window of the restaurant. I am sure that people thought I was an idiot, taking pictures of the side entrance of Crispers. A lot of you reading this are photo meme junkies too, so I bet that experience is not unique 😉

IMG_0391-sky-in-parking-lotAfter my delicious lunch, I moved across the parking lot to Barnes and Noble side of this sprawling suburban shopping center. By this time, those very clouds that had been reflected in the restaurant window had bloomed quite nicely, and I thought they looked pretty neat hovering over the trees that provide the all-important but too few and far between shaded parking spots 🙂 And there I was again, the idiot standing in the middle of the parking lot taking pictures of the sky! 😀

PS – Drat, I nearly forgot to haiku!

There she goes again –

Sanibel Skies Over Fragile Marine Ecosystems

© Copyright 2008 Tink *~*~*
http://MyMobileAdventures.com

Tranquil blues and whites
do not always reflect Truth.
Truth can lurk unseen…

IMG_0623-Sanibel-Ding-DarlingI’ve read that all it takes is one single mangrove pod in the right place under the right conditions to blossom into a mangrove island. The evidence can be seen at the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which covers a significant portion of the north side of Sanibel Island. The area is part of a larger marine ecosystem which is called the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The complex includes other refuges such as the Caloosahatchee, Matlacha (matt-luh-SHAY), Island Bay up in Charlotte County, and Pine Island.

IMG_0592-Sanibel-Mangroves-CloudsThe state of Florida recently received an “iffy” report card, which rated the state’s efforts at protecting marine life with a lot of Ds (“A” being the highest grade). This means there is lots of room for improvement in our policies and laws that govern the use and abuse of ecosystems that have an impact on these wildlife refuges. It’s not enough to have laws that only pertain to the refuges; since everything is connected, actions in the middle of the state eventually produce a downstream effect on delicate marine environments such as these.

I’m looking forward to seeing some earnest effort on the part of the state legislature toward cleaning up Florida’s act, so that subsequent report cards reflect an increase in the amount of respect we afford our natural systems.

However, if wolves DID live on Sanibel Island, they would have been HOWLING last week! The moon was just stunning in the east, as the sun set in the west. As twilight closed in, a whispy gray cloud drifted by, obscuring La Luna Bella for the briefest of moments. When the veil lifted, the sun had set, and it was time to get in the Sad Lane and go home.

Who says unlucky? Not me!
Looky, I Gots Friends 🙂 🙂 🙂

Respectively, that was the sun rising behind the WDW Swan hotel, the sun reflecting off the front of the WDW Dolphin hotel, and my fellow Long Island transplants watching the SpectroMagic parade in the Magic Kingdom that evening – Barbara, Austin, Lexie and Debbie In Paradise.

Hey, did you spot the “hidden” Mickey heads?

Sky so blue and clouds
so puffy, filtered through the
branches of the trees
.

SIX MILE CYPRESS SLOUGH is a beautiful strip of wetland woods that isn’t actually six miles – it’s about nine miles long and maybe a third of a mile wide.  The slough (pronouced “slew”, rhymes with “you” – yeah, I had to look it up!) runs alongside Six Mile Cypress Parkway, just north of Daniels Parkway in Fort Myers.  Migratory birds like to take a pit-stop here to fatten up for their long journeys hither and yon.  People come to walk through the preserve, which you might think is icky if you didn’t know that they’ve built a raised boardwalk so you’re not slogging through the swamp.  😀

I use Six Mile Cypress Parkway when I am driving to or coming home from Sanibel Island, and I always pass the sign that advertises the days of the week and the times for the guided nature walks, and think to myself that I’m going to have to play sick one of these work days and just go and do it!  I think I will ring up my friend Snowbird for this particular adventure, as she has expressed interest in the past.  I’ve been through there by myself, in the hot muggy summertime; this photo was taken in the Slough July 25th 2005, which was the trip I made down here to go house hunting.  I had to wear a ton of bug spray, and my tour ended when the skies opened up and let loose a torrential summer rain, so typical of this area during rainy season.  Yep, gonna have to do this soon, before the temps turn sultry and the air turns buggy again.

And after we do that, maybe I’ll play hookey again and we’ll do the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary down in Naples, Florida.   😉  It’s an Audubon site!

Ev’ning colors streak

it all perfectly.

I feel really terrible for some of my friends, who are enduring yet another storm with disgusting, vile forms of precipitation piling up outside.   Each time I publish a photo like this, I worry that they think I am rubbing their noses in the fact that winter is not Florida’s time for disgusting, vile precipitation; we wait for summer hurricane season for that!  So, a couple of weeks ago when many of them were down here visiting Sanibel Island, I presented them with their very own Executive Mini Sandbox, Beach Break And so, to Anne in New England and Kaki in the Midwest, and to Kim and Derice in the Mid-Atlantic states, I hope you will remember to break out the sandbox, bury some miniatures shells in the sand, and take comfort in a little pseudo-shelling and dreaming.
